Grace Kelly “transformed” Monaco’s image, expert says

Grace Kelly, famous American actress, won hearts by marrying Rainier III, Prince of Monaco, who was to experience one of the longest reigns in European history. But, his wife tragically died in a car accident in 1982 after suffering a stroke while driving. Her sudden death played into the myth that Rainier’s family, the Grimaldis, were cursed at the hands of a medieval witch in the 13th century, a theme that will be explored in a Channel 5 documentary this weekend, “The Curse of Grace Kelly’s Children ‘.

Grace’s youngest daughter, Princess Stephanie, was in the car with her mother at the time of her accident.

Currently 14th to the throne, she was considered a wild child growing up and refused to speak about her mother’s death until 1989, seven years later.

She then entered into a secret relationship with her bodyguard Daniel Ducruet and gave birth to their two children – Louis and Pauline – in 1992 and 1994.

Once Stéphanie married Mr Ducruet in July 1995, their children were included in the Monegasque estate, even though the couple divorced the following year.

They are now 15th and 16th respectively on the throne.

However, Stéphanie gave birth again, to her third child, Camille Gottlieb, in 1998.

The princess did not include the father’s name on the newborn’s birth certificate, prompting much speculation about the father’s identity.

And as Stéphanie never married Camille’s father, she was not included in the estate.

However, Camilla has since confirmed her father’s identity on Instagram, with an candid photograph of herself as a baby held by a man – Jean Raymond Gottlieb, a former palace bodyguard.

It should be noted that illegitimate children have occurred in each generation for a century within the Monegasque royal family.

Stephanie’s brother Albert II, the reigning prince of the monarch also has illegitimate children – but Camille is the oldest of Grace Kelly’s grandchildren to be excluded from the estate.

While some do obtain inheritance rights later in life, through legitimation or adoption – like Rainier’s mother, Princess Charlotte, Rainier himself has made it impossible to obtain rights in this manner.

A 2002 constitution limits succession to a simple direct and legitimate matter – before these changes, if a reigning prince died without leaving a male heir, Monaco would be incorporated into France.

Although she is not in line with the throne, Camille has explained her positive relationship with both of her parents in the past.

Two years ago, Camille explained: “My father is my right lung, my mother is my left lung.

“Without them, I couldn’t live.

“They didn’t stay together very long, but they always said to me, ‘We wanted you and our happiness is that you are here.’

“I’m really lucky. I wouldn’t trade my family for another, for the world.

She also revealed that she is close to her half-siblings.

Camille declared: “Between us, we call ourselves the ‘Three Musketeers’.

Speaking to French media Point de Vue, she continued: “With Pauline, we don’t need to phone or send messages to know that everything is fine.

“Louis is very protective of the three of us, he is the most serious, the wisest. My sister is more rock, more rebellious perhaps.

Stephanie is also unlikely to inherit the throne, as the younger siblings of the current monarch, Prince Albert II and Princess Caroline.

Albert himself has an illegitimate child, born in 2003.

He also has two legitimate twins – Hereditary Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella, Countess of Carlades – who were born in 2014 to Albert’s wife, Princess Charlene.

The Curse of Grace Kelly’s Children will air on Channel 5 Saturday at 9 p.m. ET.
