Is the Men’s Olympic 100m up for grabs? Diamond League preview

0

Until last week, Trayvon Bromell looked almost as tall as an Olympic favorite in the 100m as Usain Bolt at the last Games.

But between two meetings, the picture has become less clear.

First, South Africa Akani Simbine clocked an African record of 9.84 seconds last Tuesday in Hungary to place second in the world this year behind Bromell, who ran 9.77 and 9.80 in June.

Then, Friday in Monaco, Bromell did not take his usual exemplary start. Some said he got out of the blocks, though it’s hard to tell on video how embarrassed he was. What is clear is that he finished fifth in 10.01 in a race won by the finalist at the US Olympic trials. Ronnie baker in 9.91.

On Tuesday, Bromell can silence skeptics in the Diamond League’s final meeting before the Olympics. He is registered in the 100m, with the Olympic bronze medalist André De Grasse of Canada and third at the Olympic trials Fred kerley, in Gateshead, Great Britain.

Two of the four best women this year: Brit Holly bradshaw and american Sandi Morris. It has been a difficult time for Morris, the Olympic and world silver medalist. After finishing third at the Olympic Trials, Morris’s Poles did not reach Monaco, where she finished sixth.

200m women – 2:16 p.m.
Jamaican Elaine Thompson-Herah is the headliner here. She’s as under the radar as a reigning Olympic sprint champion can be. This is his first top-level international 200m since retiring from the 2019 World Championships. Since then, this event has crowded considerably. British Dina asher smith won the world title. Bahamian Shaunae Miller Uibo, the Olympic champion in the 400m, doubled his stake by moving to the 200m. American Gabby thomas became the second fastest woman in history. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, the two-time Olympic 100m champion, won the Jamaican Trials with a personal best (Thompson-Herah finished third). Neither of those rivals are in Gateshead.

Javelin throw men – 2:22 p.m.
The field includes the last two world champions – Anderson peters from Granada and Johannes vetter of Germany. Vetter is one of the biggest Olympic favorites in track and field, throwing farther than anyone else in the world this year in seven different competitions in six countries. His best throw in 2021 is 22 feet further than anyone.

Men’s 100m – 2:25 p.m.
Bromell’s loss to Monaco was his first in the 100m since resurrecting his sprint career in 2020. The second and third fastest men on the Olympic field – Simbine and Baker – are not listed, but De Grasse and Kerley do not. are not far behind the list of medal contenders. In his two meetings before Monaco, Bromell set the two best times in the world this year. If he shows this form to Gateshead again, Bromell will enter the Olympics as a solid favorite for the gold medal. Remember, Bolt won the Olympics in 2008 and 2012 after losing the last time he met before each Games.

800m men – 2:55 p.m.
Rio bronze medalist Clayton murphy won the US Olympic Trials in what was then the world’s fastest time this year. He has since placed third and seventh in two European competitions. Nijel Amos from Botswana and Emmanuel Korir from Kenya went one-two to Monaco, pushing Murphy to third place this year. None of the best Africans are in Gateshead, giving Murphy and his compatriot Bryce hoppel better chances of securing a confident victory before Tokyo.
