McLaren Racing – It was the weekend that was

Just hours after the world had witnessed a centuries-long heavyweight title fight as Tyson Fury triumphed over Deontay Wilder in the ring, it was Formula 1’s turn to serve up yet another sporting spectacle under the form of the Turkish Grand Prix. However, the 16th round of an exciting season turned out to be kind of a wet firecracker. Lando Norris finished where he started, and Daniel Ricciardo missed a point after a spirited recovery run from the back of the grid in a damage-limiting race for McLaren.

This is what social networks have made of it …

The weekend started off in the best possible way: with this incredible show of support – tell us about it #FansLikeNoOther

Meanwhile, others were preparing for free practice. Here is a configuration:

Lando was eager to show off his new cover during free practice on Friday…

… which went well:

Talking about that…

We may be biased but, nearly five months have passed since the Monaco Grand Prix, our unique Gulf livery is still as beautiful as ever …

Definitely a guardian, @ art_martos…

As for the merch, in addition to the usual papaya stripes on social media, pink was popular this weekend:

Bonus points for matching hair color, @kartenkaro:

In addition to being numerous to show your purchases of the McLaren Shop, every race weekend sees works of art created by fans appear on social networks; it was no different for the Turkish Grand Prix, which was a bumper weekend for captivating creations.

There were stickers …

These little guys …

And this one from @drawgemini, which gives us some serious Danny Zuko vibes. Come on, greased flash!

There were also a few passport photos that went around:

Before qualifying, the “demonstration” started.

Results were mixed: Lando qualified for the top 10 in shots on goal but Daniel couldn’t get out of Q1 as others behind him on the road completed their final lap on a track drier and in better condition.

Some 4,000 km away in Portugal, McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown has teamed up with Sky Sports F1 presenter and former McLaren F1 driver Martin Brundle. They did a little better by qualifying for the Estoril Classic.

Sunday wasn’t just race day, it was World Mental Health Day and we continued to show our support for Mind. If you have not yet entered the draw for a chance to win a hand painted Lando or Daniel t-shirt and help raise essential funds for Mind, there is still time.

The garage was bustling with activity on Sunday morning, as the team opted to change all of Daniel’s engine components except the MGU-K and battery.

Assuming he didn’t get lost on the gate …

Daniel’s fall from the grid and the wet weather hardly cooled the spirits …

And, as is the case with all good honey badgers, surrender was not an option.

Both drivers progressed in the first lap.

We were the first to blink as we pit Daniel against another set of Inters on lap 21 and in clear air. As others finally made it to the pit, Daniel climbed in command and earning a point didn’t seem out of the question.

Daniel aimed to chase Esteban Ocon for 10th place but, wearing very worn tires, the Australian had no grip in the final laps and fell into the hands of Antonio Giovinazzi and Kimi Räikkönen. Across the garage was a combination of unusual track conditions, which meant it was difficult to keep the Intermediate tire in an optimal operating window, not having enough pace to launch a concerted attack on those ahead, and a tough Lewis Hamilton, meant Lando had to settle for seventh and six points.

Looking back, these shoes might have been a little premature – I love the excitement though.

But above all …

And we will do everything we can to make it happen at the United States Grand Prix in two weeks.
