Most popular luxury hypercars, supercars and SUVs launched in 2022

The automotive revolution will continue in 2022 as electric vehicles and autonomous technology change the face of luxury travel. Driving will never be the same again, as a plethora of prestige models help shut down the internal combustion engine for good.

The next 12 months will see well-heeled buyers fuel a sales boom in premium electric vehicles, luxury SUVs and supercars. Only a global shortage of chips and a lack of public charging points will delay progress, although electric car chargers will also be mandatory for all new homes from next year.

Self-driving cars are still years away, but AI is already helping drivers, with automatic parking technology, lane assistance, and smart navigation. The new Mercedes EQS, worth £ 100,000, will feature the Drive Pilot, an ‘eyes off’ system that allows autonomous driving at up to 37 mph. The technology is expected to be legal in the UK by next spring.

Elsewhere in 2022, the most prestigious gatherings of the automotive calendar are back – which includes Private Salon Concours d’Elegance at Blenheim Palace (August 31); the Concours d’Elegance at Hampton Court (September 2); and both the Goodwood Festival of Speed (June 23) and Goodwood Revival (September 16).

In motor racing, expect a sequel to the Hamilton v Verstappen showdown that has drawn F1 fans for much of 2021. Verstappen, the new world champion, will face his big rival Hamilton from March in the the most glamorous sport in the world. The most popular track tickets, as always, will be for the glitzy Monaco Grand Prix on May 29.

However, the real stars of 2022 on the road will be a new generation of luxury cars. Many will be equipped with advanced technology that we could not have dreamed of about 20 years ago, most will be at least partially powered by batteries. Here is our rundown of models worth the wait.

The new Range Rover is expected to arrive by May – a £ 100,000-plus model that will eventually feature a fully electric transmission for the first time. Land Rover’s off-road limousine is the benchmark when it comes to luxury SUVs and it looks fantastic. The latest version is more elegant than before, with a hybrid model from launch and seven seats available for the first time.
