Piastri missing F1 2023 seat would be an ‘injustice’

In the summary: Callum Ilott says Formula 2 champion Oscar Piastri must clinch a Formula 1 seat next year after being overlooked for promotion in 2022.

Ilott: Piastri must have his chance in F1 in 2023

Former F2 driver Ilott has said IndyCar was a “fresh start” for him after he failed to win promotion to F1 himself. However, he is convinced Piastri, who won the F2 title as a rookie next year, should not be passed over for promotion.

“You always believe it’s not going to happen to you and ultimately it does,” Ilott said. “Life is like that.”

However, he said his situation was not the same as that of Piastri. “It’s a bit different in the sense that there was no availability for the support package that he had for this year. So I wasn’t surprised, in that sense [that he wasn’t promoted].

“Which would be a surprise if at the end of this year if he didn’t have a seat for the following year. Because you can have a gap year as we have seen with many drivers, but if there is not one at the end of the year I will be very surprised and it will be an injustice to the junior formula and the single-seater ladder that we have.

Ilott commits to IndyCar for 2022

However, Ilott acknowledges that there is a shortage of F1 places for talented drivers coming out of F2. “There are 20 seats and most of them are taken by guys who have proven themselves and deserved this seat for a long time,” he said. “At the end of the day, it’s expensive for the teams, it’s expensive for the sponsors and you have to adapt to this package. And unfortunately that doesn’t always work.

Bird signs multi-year contract with Jaguar

Sam Bird has extended his time with Jaguar with a new three-year deal that will see him stay with the team until the ‘Gen3’ era of Formula E arrives in 2023. Bird is one of two drivers to have participated in every Formula E race (the other is Lucas di Grassi) and the only one to have won a race in the previous seven seasons, having competed until 2021 with the then Virgin team.

Bird moved to Jaguar last season and was able to compete with dominant teammate Mitch Evans, winning races at Diriyah and New York.
