The Queen has already swapped meals with staff after a bizarre request from Prince Philip

What happens around the dining table of Britain’s most famous family interests many people and there are many quirks that come with royal family table etiquette. One incident in particular stands out as contrary to the image you might have of Downton Abbey-style service topped off with grandeur and lavish meals.

Their meal routine is far from what you might expect, with Prince William and Prince Harry famous for their love of McDonald’s growing up, the Queen’s bunless burgers with cranberries for fun and love of late Prince Philip for common sense. It was the Duke of Edinburgh’s love of the ordinary that led the Royal Family to swap meals with staff.

A far cry from the sight of three saffron-roasted birds and a crust of gold leaf, the diet at the palace often consisted of plain, simple dishes, but even that was sometimes too much for Prince Philip. He once requested a meal swap with royal household staff after watching their significant chops, according to former private royal chef Darren O’Grady.

Once Prince Philip spotted the staff meal, he knew he had to make the swap

Mr O’Grady told MarieClaire in an interview that Prince Philip once made the decision to swap the whole family’s meal for one served to the staff. Philip was not a fan of the organic or the pretentious when it came to his meals and it seems that on this occasion Her Majesty followed suit.

McGrady revealed: “He came into the kitchen and said, ‘What’s for dinner tonight? And I said, “I’ve got these little one inch lamb meat eyes for you, Your Royal Highness.” “His qualms apparently weren’t with the meat itself, but rather with the portion and once he had spotted what the staff would be tucking into he was quick to act.

“He looked and said, ‘What are these – what are they? And I said, ‘Oh, those are chops, Your Highness.’ He wanted to know who they were talking to, and I said, ‘staff’. And he said, ‘Oh, can’t we have them?’ I ended up giving her those big, meatier chunks, and the staff had the other chunks.”
